In all cultures, weddings are very important, mixing religious beliefs and tradition. Every country has thier own way to celebrate. Mexico, as a multicultural country also has very different ways to celebrate a wedding. Usually, as in many cultures, the bridge is dressed in white, and also there is a dance /usually with a banda playing a vals) where the couple dance alone, later with thier parents, and then with thier in laws.

Guadalajara also adds a particular characteristic to the weddings, the use of a marichi in the party.

Acording to Wikipedia, "People in Mexico is made of Mestizos (those of European and Amerindian ancestry) form the largest group, making up to 60%–75% of the total population. The percentage of Amerindians, called indigenous peoples (indígenas) in Mexico, is estimated to be between 12% (pure Amerindian)[47] or 30% (predominantly Amerindian). Ethnic Europeans make up 9% and 15% of the population, mostly descendants of the first Spanish settlers, although many have German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Irish, Polish, Romanian, Russian and British ancestry; many are found in major cities after the waves of immigration that brought many Europeans at the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, along with some Canadians and Euro-Americans from the United States."

The girl in the left is of Italian ancestry, but here it does not matters where your parents were born. Mexico is ethnically diverse, and the constitution defines the country to be a "pluricultural nation". According to law all we aere mexicans, despite our origin, and people consire themselves mexicans.

All mexican haciendas had a chaptel or a church, this is not the exception. This is a detail from the Ex-Hacienda Santa Lucia, close to Guadalajara. The place now is used for weddings, both, the ceremony and the party.

"Fun" on the street

Red lights in Mexico are way much more than just put your foot on the brake, it means... showtime!! (even when in most of the cases you get kind of depressed after seeing how needed is your people).

I took this while on a red light at Naciones Unidas and Patria Avenue. This guy was playing fireballs while behind of him we can se a partner doing something with a ladder.

I know doing this is much better than stealing, but I can't help but feeling bad about this situation.

The School of Music

This is the entrance of the School of Music. It belongs to the Universidad de Guadalajara. It is located close to the Teatro Degollado and also to a church, in an ancient building. You can see the figure of Bethoven. When you walk in front of the shcool, you can hear the musicians practicing their lessons. Saturdays and sundays there are special courses for people who are not professionals.

Ernesto Cruz is a very well known name on galerists and decorators in Tlaquepaque. This is the lock of the door to its gallery. Heart shapes are his trademark, you can find candles, boxes, jewelry with heart shapes like this.

For example, at the corner of Morelos an Colón Street you can find in the first level a very well known coffee shop named "La Flor de Córdoba", but as soon as you look upstairs... there it is! A bridal shop!! (in Mexico, bridal shops also sell dresses for girls that turn 15, remember this post?) .

This is the "Rinconada de las Tapias del Convento de San Agustín" meaning "The corner of Las Tapias at The San Agustin Convent", originally part of the mentioned convent that was built on 1573.

These are the front columns of the Degollado Theater. It first opened on Thursday 13, September, 1866, with Lucia Di Lammeroor, written by Gaetano Donizetti.

On its early years the Degollado theater was known as the Great Alarcon Theatre, but due to an oustanding job promoting GDL's culture, Mr. Santos Degollado (former governor of Jalisco) received the honour to give his name to this theatre.

Las week I went to pick up a suit to the city´s downtown. I had my camera so I took some pics of the city, and I like this view of an old building in the Maestranza Street, close to the goverment´s palace.

By the way, the building has a name in the windows, "joy Slava" it says, well, it has nothing to do with the famous discoteque in Madrid, Spain.

Nortec is the word to describe two rhythms in the mexican electronic scene: Nor from Norteño, an style of tradicional music from the North of the country, with influence form Germany and Poland, that started to be developed in the 19 century, and tec for Techno, refering to the use of electronic instruments and electronic music.

So, what is all of this about?, well this month in Guadalajara we have the may's cultural festival. Usually there is an invited country, recent years we have seen cultural acts from Austria, Germany, Brazil, etc. but this year Mexico was the "invited", so the Nortec Collective was performing last night for free. It was amazing to see a bunch of musicians using laptop computers and various electronic stuff, performing together with traditional "banda Sinaloense" musicians. The square was converted in a dance floor.

Handing tickets for parking on a prohibited area might be a good job... I mean, you get to caught people doing what they already know they're not supposed to do and you can put that right on their faces. Well this transit officer (in Jalisco the police doesn't manage issues about traffic... we'll talk about this later) was just handing a ticket while I was walking downtown (and yes I took this in the middle of the street).

Oh how good must be to try to put people back on the right way!!

I found this nice (and colorful) place at the corner of Florencia and Ruben Dario street.
Va de Vi translates to 'It’s About Wine' in Spain’s Catalan language. I have not been able to eat there yet, but as soon as I'll do it I'll tell you if the taste of their food is as delicious as its view.

In the Metro Area of Guadalajara we have the Tlajomulco de Zuñiga County where you will find a lake named Cajitlan. This lake was part of the big lake of Chapala, before the increase on our population destroy it and make it a good place for aquatic races.

The biggest Celebration

Every catholic church in Mexico has a image of Guadalupe together with the mexican flag.

Probably the biggest religious celebration in Mexico, after Christmas, it is the day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Every december 12 almost all the country celebrates the day when Virgin Mary apears to a aztec indian, 16 century. This tale is in the deepest memory of the mexicans. Some say that tGuadalupe is the same as the old goddest Tonatzin. Anyway, the symbolical meaning is the birth of Mexico as a own nation, a mixture of Spanish conquerors and Indian cultures.
More than a religious symbol, it means Mexico.

This is "El Templo de Aranzazu", it was bigger but some parts were destroyed by the "Reforma War" in 1857, were the liberal and the conservaty party were fighting each other. At the end the liberal won, and the issues like to have an official religion - used to be Catholic -, changed, since then and now it does not matter what you believe or not believe.

La Alemana y la torta ahogada

As you can see, this is an old restaurant called "La Alemana" or the "German" in english. It seems like has nothing special but if we get deeper in its story we will find that one of the here was the born place of one of the most famous dishes from Guadalajara: La Torta Ahogada.

In a next post I will talk about this dish, but I can said chili is one of the main ingredient, and it is really hot.

You may not know, but the Christmas star, Winter rose, Noche Buena or Pascua flower was originated in Mexico. Pointing that, obviously it is one of the xmas features we enjoy during this season and, as you can imagine, is VERY used as ornament.

I just saw this palm at this pot looking so weird with nochebuenas at the bottom, that had to capture it for you.

The 20th Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) edition, will take place from november 25 until december 30 at the Expo Guadalajara (Latin America's biggest convention center).

El Ex-convento del Carmen

I saw this paint in the Ex-convento del Carmen's exhibition of exprimental art and I really liked it, it is so real.

The Carmen Ex-convent is a space opened to everyone for free where you can find different and diverse artistic manifastations. There are 5 rooms with exhibitions of painting, photography or sculpture of local or foreign artists.

Another permanent activities are the Musical Tuesdays or Literary Wednesdays. Also it has a cinema room, coffee house and book store.

La feria (Fair)

As november 2nd we all went to the cementery, I felt attracted by this tomb. I was walking down this stairs to see what was behind but never got there... the curious thing is it wasn't decorated as the others, so I felt alone.

Dia de Muertos (day of the dead)

The day of the Dead is very important in Mexico, as almost all cultures in the world have a ceremony to celebrate their ancestors, Mexico is not the exception and we also celebrate our people who has passed away. We have altars with flowers and candles, as many other countries, but additionally we also put the pics of the dead person and their favorite meals and beverages. The idea is that every November the 2nd the dead people is permitted to come to the world of the living persons and they want to eat their favorite dishes. How they eat them? They eat the smell of the food. Next day the family eat the dishes, we called "recalentado" or re-heated.

Pan de Muerto (bread of the dead) is also popular, and the recipe may change in different places of the country, it is sweet bread with some figures representing bones.

Perhaps the most famous celebration of the dead in Mexico are the skull candies, live the ones in the pic, made of sugar and they put your name in the skull. You can give them as a gift to your friends and relatives. It is nothing morbid, it is only a way to think that sooner or later we are going to die, so it is better to enjoy the life.

Also is common to give figures of skeletons having normal activities, like playing guitars, dancing, singing, cooking, professors, etc. Some of them are made of clay and others of papier mache.

LLT was the name of a 90's Techno band from Mexico City and the meaning was "Los Legendarios Tlaconetes", It may be translated as "The Legendary Snails". In Guadalajara is rare to call this animals Tlaconetes, it is a Nahuatl word but I am not sure about the meaning. The name is more used in the south and the center of Mexico. Here they are called "Caracoles" and are very commun in rain season.

This is how old gas bombs used to be in Mexico (these are some of the new ones, I was not permited to photograh them). But now this one had become in a… ehm… a… something to put things on :) and including a “fishbowl” on the inside.
PEMEX (Petroleos Mexicanos) is the only company allowed to manage Mexico's black gold. And may I add that we have soooo much to talk about it!!

This weekend I went toZapotlanejo , and on my way to the country side of this town (like 1 hour away from GDL) I was able to catch this image of agave plants (from where tequila is obtained). This is on a very old way, into a ranch, hence the pile of rocks tham makes the fence.

"El chorrito", a song for kids about a spurt in a fountain, ants getting wet and all kind of incoherences I loved when I was little; written by Mister Gabilondo Soler. By the way, this "chorrito" is in Los Arcos de Guadalajara, maybe we'll see them in the future.

New Arch for the not so new millenium

Well, in a previous post Liz talk about the Millenium arches, so in a certain way you are already familiarized with them and about they should be finished by the year 2000 but the money was finished and the sculture was incompleted. This year more resources came and a 4 arch is being build, but still the piece is incompleted. Do you want to donate some money?

A lot of things you could say about the Government Palace of the State of Jalisco: the original building is from 1650 and inside you can find beautiful murals of the artist Jose Clemente Orozco, one of them is specially famous by being in the covers of elementary school text books. Also, here is the place where Miguel Hidalgo signed the decree to abolish slavery during the Independence War and the congress of the stated used to work here since 1873 to 1982.

The important thing about this building (and this post) is that little hole in the clock. My mom used to tell me that during the Revolution a bullet crossed the clock and it never stops working, I don't know if that is true 'cause I've never found anything about it, but when I was little, it was a good story.

Learning to live

Street children is a very common (and sad) problem in Mexico. I think is really hard for them to learn to live such a hard life from a very young age.

I don’t think this class of “education” is available from books, but I least I’m glad this cute boy was looking forward to find a new world from his reading.
